Free Trade with Europe

It was widely reported over the weekend (CBC Article) that Canada and Europe have reached a preliminary understanding over a Free Trade Agreement, I saw mention of it while I was traveling last week, but didn’t have time to read up until I got home over the weekend. I still need to do more reading, but:

What does it mean?

If you do some additional reading and searching you will find links that make things very interesting:

Automotive sector – Canada will recognise a list of EU car standards and will examine the recognition of further standards. This will make it much easier to export cars to Canada. – Mark Stevenson (Article)

Now what EU car standards will these be? I suspect that lots of information will come out before the Free Trade Agreement is finalized, but I suspect that we might see some interesting European vehicles here in a few years. I’ve been really busy the last few days, but I will try to find more information and post a follow-up in a few days.

One Response to Free Trade with Europe

  1. Chris says:

18months to two years to have the treaty translated into the over 20 languages of the EU…. joint organizations to look at non-tariff issues such as auto safety:

Automotive sector – Canada will recognise a list of EU car standards and will examine the recognition of further standards, from which EU car exports to Canada will benefit.

I would hope this is enough of a change in climate to have VW send the vehicle down or at least signal that they are starting the process
